FEATURE BIKE

JC's 1974 Harley Sportster

She's a 74 sporty that I got 3 years ago in pieces for 2 grand. The guy I bought it from said the motor was stuffed with no compression.
After backing off the lifters I found that there was plenty. The gear box had had work done to it so it was just a matter of throwing the guards,  tanks and wheels on, re-wire, and she was pretty much there. The oil tank had no top so I ripped into an old mitsi bonnet to make another one.

The foot controls were made from old motor mounts and the linkages are off a Toyota Hiace. Gear and back break levers are old XL125 shifters. The clutch cable was fashioned out of a Falcon hand break cable and works sweet. I put some FXR shocks that a mate had on the back, which has put it in the weeds. The coil is mounted on an 80s blinker stork. The carb is a CV carb and I had to sand the slide up a bit, as it stuck, which is why it got taken off, another example of junk becoming usable again. It runs ok with the choke out 3/4 of the way.

I've really enjoyed riding the old girl even though it leaks like a sieve ( 3 ltrs from Rotorua to Coro and back and had to buy a 4 ltr pack in Paeroa and zip tie it to the handle bars - you can imagine the looks I got). It hasn't let me down, and with winter here it's a good time to freeze my ass off in the shed and fix a few things. Hell, maybe get the old girl vinned, you never know. After spending a grand total of $2500 I suppose I could fork out for some stickers.

PS. The truck has been in the family longer than I have.

Cheers, JC.
